Smoke and Mirrors

Image-5

Morning all! Prov 13.7 says “One pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.”

Fake it until you make it might work in some contexts but certainly not all. In an effort to be what we’re not, some of us are giving Oscar-winning performances and doing the absolute most to be recognised by our peers in a certain way. Money is a superficial example of an area where looks can be deceiving: we’ve all heard stories of people living far above their means, trying to keep up with someone else’s lifestyle to their own detriment. The reality though, is that pretence can run far deeper. Friends, family and even the media can make us feel like what we have and what we are isn’t enough and as a result, we feel we have to prove our worth by ‘plugging the gaps’ wherever they exist. Aspiration is a positive characteristic, but it becomes problematic at the point when we feel inferior to others because of it. Let’s never forget that God sees us exactly as we are and loves us just the same. Our story isn’t over yet and although we’re flawed in hundreds of ways, God created us to be our authentic selves. Put simply, with God, you are enough. God has you where He wants you in this season and has equipped you with what you need for this moment. That doesn’t mean there isn’t more to come but let’s always remember that His strength is made perfect in our weakness

Happy Wednesday!

  1. I was just thinking about this today. How we live in a society where nothing is really as it seems. And if we allow our emotions to be influenced by façade, we will end up being lost and loose confidence in who God says we are. It’s a tough one. Thanks for sharing Tomi! It’s best to walk this life with God, in His timing 💞😊

    • Completely agree! The need to pretend we’re something we’re not takes away from the unique way God created us! Sorry it’s taken so long to respond Joan – your response speed is #goals!! Haha!
